The Godfather Film Analysis

The use of color was very interesting. In the beginning of the film iNot t is dark in Vito’s office . It was interesting because a lot of films I have seen start out with action packed and bright lights to get the audience’s attention.  Even though this film started out slow and dark it was still intriguing to watch it. It was intriguing to me about the story that Bonasera was telling to Vito about his daughter. To hear how his daughter got beat up by a group of boys.I think this was a very good way to start off this film with this kind of story because I think that the situation the girl was in and what happened to her slowly lures the audience in. We stay engaged with the story and soon we want to hear how it ends. This story ends of Bonasera asking Vito to kill the men who beat his daughter. I have thought that this is just human nature. We hear a story and throughout it we become more and more interested about it. Here we are concerned about the girl’s health and well being and we want to know how she is doing.

I saw quite a bit of the use of the Rule of Thirds. When Bonasera is asking Vito for a favor. You can see that Vito is on the left a lot and you notice that he is the one controlling the conversation. Bonasera is asking him for a favor yet Vito declines to complete it yet Bonasera continues to beg him. Another time I saw the Rule used was when Michael met with the Police Chief and Sollozzo. When Michael is telling him that he wants a truce between their families and he is the one making the demands. For the camera movement, I do believe that it moved a lot as it gave us a lot of SRS, to give us the view that characters would have had so we can see their reactions.

The ECU was used when Michael met with the Police Chief and Sollozzo intending to kill them. He goes and gets the gun from the bathroom and comes back. Then Sollozzo starts talking to Michael in Italian. I am not sure what he said to him but as he is, the music is getting louder and the camera is zooming in on Micheal’s face until it is an ECU. Then you can tell his facial expression changes instantly and he shoots the Chief and Sollozzo. I think that maybe Sollozzo said something to Michael that he didn’t like and he finally just snapped. Whether he was going there to actually kill them or not, I think that  he was just waiting for the conversation to get calmed down but Sollozzo pushed him over the edge before it got to that point. The ECU was important because we had to see what Michael’s expression was to what he was being told. It needed to be emphasized because this was the biggest catalyst for Michael Corleone.

What I believe was the internal goal is that family is everything. Sollozzo and Hagen wanted the Corleone family to get into the business of drugs. Vito said no because he thought that the illegal drug business was much more dangerous than the illegal gambling business. He wanted to protect him family and some of that protection came from supporters of the gambling business but they may have not supported the drug business. What I think the external goal was that they wanted to go legit. Meaning that they wanted to get out of the illegal gambling business and find a legitimate way to make a living. What the theme was is that public vs. private. What I mean by that is that throughout the film Vito kept his family and his business separate. He would never talk about business at the table. But when Michael takes over the family he tries to keep it separate but as time goes on the boundaries between business and family starts to fall apart. We may believe that we can live a double life (a life of good and a life of bad), but as it may seem to that it will work, it all falls apart.

Why I think this movie was so popular was because it combined the tradition of romance, thriller, gangsta, and family. It takes you deeper into the lives of the mob and how their life operates. Other mob films are quite violent like Scarface. But this film shows that violence isn’t the whole life of the mob. This film shows that even though they can be some of the worst of lawbreakers out there, their families mean everything to them.
